Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Ideas for Your Old Pillowcases

A Book Bag Made from an Old PillowcaseWhen your household linens get worn out and replaced, what do you do with your old ones? While some just throw them out, you can repurpose your old pillowcases into items that you can still reuse. There are a lot of ways you can reuse old pillowcases around your Owasso rental home. Here are some ideas to inspire some creativity of your own!

Floor cushion. Pillowcases make comfortable floor pillows or chairs! Simply sew three or four pillowcases together along the long edges, stuff with pillows or other filler, and sew closed. These cushions are perfect for your game room or reading room, and are also great for sleepovers!

Dog bed. You can also repurpose your old pillowcases as a cover for your dog bed! Over time, dog beds can show a lot of signs of abuse. Why not make use of your old pillowcases as a cover for an existing dog bed that you can remove and wash? You can also just use new stuffing and turn that old pillowcase into a new dog bed. Either way, you get to save money!

Apron. Older linens have cute patterns that make cute wearables, like an apron. You can cut and sew the fabric of a pillowcase and turn it into a fun and functional apron. Aprons come in different sizes and styles, so you can easily pick one to customize.

Laundry bag. Because of their shape, pillowcases are easily repurposed into a variety of creative uses. A very simple repurpose is to just add a drawstring around the top opening of an old pillowcase and turn it into a laundry bag. You’ll just need to fold the top edge over, sew, and then thread a cord through. A pillowcase laundry bag that is the right size for a small space or for traveling is an easy DIY anyone can make!

Reusable shopping bag. For a few extra minutes, you can also repurpose that old pillowcase into a reusable shopping bag. There will be a bit more cutting and sewing involved to make the handles, but it should be no problem for someone who knows how to use a needle.

Chair Covers. Another really easy way to reuse old pillowcases is to use them as decorative chair covers for your home. Slip vintage or decorative pillowcases with pretty patterns over the backs of chairs and achieve a new look. To keep the covers securely in place, you can tie a ribbon or cord around the chair back.

Book tote. That old pillowcase can also help you carry your books around! A book tote is something you can finish within a few hours. You only need to cut strips off the top of the pillowcase and sew them into handles. You will have created a fun and functional tote to take with you anywhere.

Dress or cute top. Finally, what could be sweeter than a favorite pillowcase turned into a child’s dress or summer top? There are many easy patterns to create pretty dresses, skirts, or tops that are perfect to wear on warm summer days.
